Reason Five - Future Fear

Liner Notes:

"Just a song before I go, a lesson to be learned..."

I'm leaving for Chicago in the morning, but have this last song to post before I go. I'll be back in mid August, hopefully with a bunch of new songs to record... I might post a few mando demos from the road since I'll be taking the mandolin and my smart phone, but it may be best to wait on them until I get home and then have a big recording session to flesh them all out... we'll see. Keep writing songs everybody!!!

Lyrics:

I once had this habit of filling up pages with words
A somewhat disordered collection of ideas I’d purged
From the chaos inside my head
Inside my head
From the chaos inside my head
But I think all the ink has dried up now and somehow it’s clearer
All that’s behind me is safe and unchanging it’s the future that is cause to fear
It’s the chaos outside instead
Of the chaos inside my head
O the future fear
The unpredictable

Fight or flight neither choice can be right
When it is my job to be here
Gentle and near
Nobody trained me or taught me or expected me to decide
To abide by these rules
To fear the outside instead
Of the chaos inside my head
O the future fear
The unpredictable

Fight or flight neither choice can be right
When it is my job to be here
Gentle and near

Oh, Izaak... I love the mandolin tone with the chamber instruments. The musings lyrically are splendid as well. What more can I say but that this is a splendid song; possibly my favourite of 50/90 this year to this point!

Very theatrical! I love the instrumentation and cello solo. I'm embarrassed to ask, but are all these instruments live? They sound live, but I'm not sure I've met anyone that's that proficient with that many instruments. I'm so impressed! Back to the song... I love the key change oooh bridge. I could really see this being part of a musical.

Aw... thanks for the kind words Kat. Yes, everything's live acoustic instruments. It's sort of become my schtick. On some of my tracks I will program a drum track with logic, but I prefer to overdub real instruments only. There's weird stuff you can do with acoustic instruments that would never happen with samples. Smile

Oh lordy, I love me some cello. I haven't been brave enough to include mine in my songs so far, as my skills are feeble. The syncopation really drives things forwards and gels with the unstable/chaos lyrical theme. Magnificent arrangement with an unusual combo of instruments, the bridge with the oooo's and bells...love everything about this tune.

Massively theatrical and hugely entertaining. This has a rolling groove to it that's infectious and the cello has a lurching drunken quality to it that's got me quite mesmerized. Brilliant.
