Love Lesson (She Loved Who She Loved)

Liner Notes:

Rather autobiographical - remembering feelings and events from childhood and struggling with emerging feelings of love for a counselor at Girl Scout camp and the ramifications of that - obviously I moved on but the time (I was actually 13 I think but twelve added a nice internal rhyme) I wanted life to be over - it felt like my world ended when I was told I could never return to camp. This was a surprisingly hard lyric to right as 45 years later the memory of this still stings and now makes me angry.

Hopefully scout leaders (teachers, parents, etc) are more empathetic and understanding today but the rate of suicide among LGBTQ youth is still much too high

Lyrics:

V1
she wrote a love poem
on the back of birch bark
she made a bouquet
with ferns she picked
she wrapped them up tight
in a honeysuckle vine
and left it for her love in the
middle of the night

PC
under the watch
of the moon's soft light

C
she loved who she loved
then learned her love was wrong
she loved who she loved
until it was taken and gone
if she loved who she loved
she could not love herself
if she loved who she loved
she was bad
she was wrong

V2
she waited for a sign
from her love the next day
she watched and hoped
that they'd feel the same
she sat next to them
brushed up against their leg
and was told she must never
feel love this way

PC
under the glare
of sun at midday

C
she loved who she loved
then learned her love was wrong
she loved who she loved
until it was taken and gone
if she loved who she loved
she could not love herself
if she loved who she loved
she was bad
she was wrong

B
she learned love was bad
she learned love was wrong
and learned it so well...that by twelve...
she couldn't love anymore

she learned love was bad
she learned love was wrong
and learned it so well...that by twelve...
she couldn't live anymore

OUTRO
if she loved who she loved
she could not love herself
if she loved who she loved
she was bad
she was wrong

Tear time! How can I read this and not cry? I am so sorry you went through this and that it still stings all these years later. Very touching and sad. Love is who we are-all of us!

This is so touching and heart wrenching. I see why it still hurts. It brings back all those feelings, the feeling everything about you is somehow wrong. I know that feeling so well. That line in the chorus is so powerful. "If she loved who she loved/she could not love herself." That sums it up, and it's a painful, sometimes unrecoverable thing to put in a kid's head. So sad.

The mention of vines, birches and other naturalist images in the opening verse gives it a bit of a classical feel - places it in the world that gave us Sapphos of Lesbo.

Looking at the lyrics at a glance, we see a lot of 'she' and 'loved', but reading through, it doesn't get jarring. It's a good, effective use of repetition that doesn't compromise the flow or shake us from being lost in the story. Well done.

So many people will find comfort in your sharing the experience. Theres just something about putting it on the table... its sets people free to be who they are.

Truly a sad turn of affairs. I know what it's like to like someone and be told that you cannot like them...for all kinds of reasons. Society is a sometimes cold entity.

As a scoutleader I say YES its very different now, at least in sweden. I am so sad to hear this happend.
I guess I am very lucky living in a country where its atleast demands from the state that keep equality in all matters.
