Helen is our neighbor. She is a lovely woman in her mid 90s. When we first bought our cottage 4 years ago she still swam and fished in the lake. She has a dock with a bench at the end where she used to sit for hours. After a rough winter with her health she has not been able to get out to the lake. Her bench has sat empty and is the subject of many photos I take. Her great granddaughter visits every summer and has become my son's best friend. Helen is a lovely woman who has become someone I care deeply about.... I wish I could give her health and lake back. I wish I could have grown up swimming and fishing with her in the lake! I am making a photo book for her of lake pictures.

Lyrics:

V1
Helen's bench sits empty
at the end of her dock
reflecting on cool water
from dawn through nine o'clock

Helen sits by the window
in her vintage living room
looking out at the water
waiting for her moon

C1
for over ninety years
she's lived at this lake
watching the sun rise and fall
through joys and heartaches
that she has known...
over ninety years

V2
Helen's grown unsteady
her body's become frail
she can't get to her bench
go out to swim or sail

Helen's eyes still smile
her laughter fills the air
as she shares memories
with great grandchildren there

C2
for over ninety years
this lake has been her home
swimming and fishing
as people come and go
that she has known...
over ninety years

B
I watch Helen at her window
and bring flowers to her door
I listen to her loving words
and wish I could give her more

C1
for over ninety years
she's lived at this lake
watching the sun rise and fall
through joys and heartaches
that she has known...
over ninety years

C2
for over ninety years
this lake has been her home
swimming and fishing
as people come and go
that she has known...
over ninety years

That's such a kind and thoughtful lyric. Her empty bench is a strong image.

What a heartfelt tribute to your neighbor. Focusing on the bench really personalizes it and I can see her in her surroundings. You've captured her spirit with warmth and beauty.

Love and craftmanship in this lyric, very nicely done. It's good she still has smiling eyes and +1 her empty bench being a strong image.

Warm, fond, and casts the subject in a loving and positive light. I enjoyed this.

I just love that Helen had so many years out on the lake. It's a place she obviously loves. So sad that she can't get to her bench anymore. I'm sure you can still feel her presence there. Such a touching lyric.

Oh, how lovely and sad. Very touching lyrics. I hope you get to play her the song someday.

May we all be able to connect with others as you have with Helen, especially a blessing in our weaker hours. A tender tribute to this special friend and to your loving heart. I especially liked the notion of her still able to see 'her moon' from where she sits inside (reflecting in the lake, too, I presume?). Thanks for sharing the personal story behind it.
