Cats and Crickets

Liner Notes:

This is a rather mysterious one that probably started when I heard from a nephew who is currently traveling thru both eastern and western europe, and all the impact that all that tangible history (compared to, say, north america) was having. Thinking about my own travels in Europe and Israel way back when (not all that much traveling, compared to some, but it did make an impact)... trotted out a set of open-tuning-sounding chords (tho played on a 'regular' tuning) that i had stumbled on many years ago, and repurposed for this. Did a little more then my usual no-production production, with overdubbed lead guitar and background vocals. Enjoy!

Lyrics:

The sound of cats and crickets
Footsteps on ancient stone
The illusion all this was waiting
For your eyes alone

Is it a regular day mundane and bereft
Of residual magic that still has been left
The ghosts that are summoned are part of the theft
That will steal your heart away
And you’re left with little to say

Language in sound and phrases
Not able to be translated
Gestures that seemed universal
Can only be estimated

Is it a regular day mundane and bereft
Of residual magic that still has been left
The ghosts that are summoned are part of the theft
That will steal your heart away
And you’re left with little to say

That facts and dates can be memorized
But little distortions can turn into lies
And searching for stories you’re sometimes surprised
At all the ways it’s been sanitized

The sound of cats and crickets
Footsteps on ancient stone
The illusion all this was waiting
For your eyes alone

Is it a regular day mundane and bereft
Of residual magic that still has been left
The ghosts that are summoned are part of the theft
That will steal your heart away
And you’re left with little to say

Love this title and story behind it! Captivating in a way!

Nicely captures that feeling being somewhere foreign you've only read about. Really love the chorus lyrics. 'The illusion all this was waiting/For your eyes alone' is so true of first setting eyes on some special place.

I like the subtle melody with the sometimes surprising chord changes. The lyrics are mysterious (in a nice way), the bridge reminded me of the fake news stories you hear these days al the time. And it is strange, when you actually live in Europe you don't realize there is so much history around you, I should travel around more I guess.

The lyrical rhythms of this are so unexpected, but in a good way. Solid work. Smile

I love the chord progression - familiar, yet exotic. Which is cool because the incredible lyrics sound like something from a vivid dream. Groovy lead, too - slippery and trippy.
