The Just Reward

Liner Notes:

So this is my 'don't-wake-the-neighbors' voice, recorded outside on the porch, too late, after too many drinks... but I'm so far behind in the challenge that I'm going to have to post all kinds of imperfection for the sake of the song. The amazing thing is that after all these years, I can finally keep a swinging 7/8 meter groove together even when I've been drinking.

The chords, except for the instrumental break, were generated by the auto chords.com site after a few clicks as the main progression for verses and the first alternate for the chorus. The words are pretty abstract and pulled from my #storycube roll: comedy/tragedy masks, a stooped over woman, a sleeping face, a rat, and the action was someone accidentally knocking over something.

Also, the scat singing ought to be a trombone or trumpet or even saxophone or something, but this is a one-take demo.

Okay then.

Lyrics:

Doot doot doobie doo
Doot doot doo doobie
Doot doot doobie doo doot

Don’t forget where you’re going
Or accidentally knock something over
All stooped, crooked and bent
So far forward
Look, look at your sleeping face
Woman, look, look at your sleeping face

Doot doot doobie doo
Doot doot doo doobie
Doot doot doobie doo doot

You’re a cosmopolitan rat
Wearing a comedy-tragedy mask
Your perseverance has earned you
The just reward
Look, look at your sleeping face
Woman, look, look at your sleeping face

Blending in to the woodwork
Moving smooth as clockwork
Any better strategy could work
Before you try it you knock it first
Look, look at your sleeping face
Woman, look, look at your sleeping face

Doot doot doobie doo
Doot doot doo doobie
Doot doot doobie doo doot

The absurdity of looking at your own sleeping face gives this a memorable quality. Love the way your chords are played on this. Great job rising to the challenge.

Great blend of your rolls. Liked the feel of the song. Some really nice chords in here. The 'doot' section was fun. Enjoyed my listen!

The doot doot doobies are just charming and a good hook. Random auto chords are actually pretty logical and musical. Lyrics are a bit hazy but there is a nice feel to them. I like the melodies and the 7/8 time makes it all sound fresh and new. Very goodly done for a quickie. Smile

Really nice one! You make the 7/8 sound very natural with some catchy melody lines. Pulled the words from the storycube roll together nicely as well, it's abstract but I could see a little story in there.

Love the open strings on the instrumental jam sections. Deeply envious of your ability to maintain any time signature after a few drinks, let alone this one!
