Cookies in the Dark

Tags:

Demo:

Liner Notes:

The title and a very rough version of the chorus came to me during last Fawm. Now after some rewrites it was finished during Finish Friday.

Sometimes all you have is cookies. But it's better that you have cookies and comfort than no cookies and comfort at all. Smile

I've also experimented with the tuning of the guitar. It's standard otherwise, but high e is dropped to d. Opened up new possibilities.

Lyrics:

Cookies in the Dark

Schoolgirls can be so mean
their lying smiles from a bad dream
then she'll stay up all night
hoping music would make it right

mmmbop-mmmbop-bop
mmmbop-mmmbop-bop
mmmbop-mmmbop-bop
mmm-boop!

She eating cookies in the dark
eating cookies in the dark
Hungry heart needs a snack
Love a cookie - cookie loves you back

Teenage boys can be cruel
they can't find nothing else to do
Pick on her, spit and stare
feel her up like she's freeware

mmmbop-mmmbop-bop
mmmbop-mmmbop-bop
mmmbop-mmmbop-bop
mmm-boop!

She eating cookies in the dark
eating cookies in the dark
Hungry heart needs a snack
Love a cookie - cookie loves you back

Another cookie, another cookie, another cookie
another cookie, another cookie, another cookie

All she ever wanted was to be was herself
now they're making her to be all by herself
and the love that she needs is too high on the shelf
...but she can reach a cookie

She eating cookies in the dark
eating cookies in the dark
Hungry heart needs a snack
Love a cookie - cookie loves you back

Another cookie, another cookie, another cookie
another cookie, another cookie, another cookie

Right away with the music you had me. Such an interesting subject to write about. Love that mmmbop! A masterpiece!

Cookies are a treat; definitely a comfort food, and you manage to tell a serious story with sensitivity and care. I like the gentle guitar and it tells its own story as I felt like I had time to reflect on what was happening. Nicely done! "Cookie loves you back" is so very true.

Powerful lyrics that unfortunately I can relate to too well. Those teen years can be brutal and emotional stress eating is all too common. Great delivery drives home the heavy message in a very palatable way. You bit off something to chew on here!

Love your guitar work in this song, and the way it enhances the vocals when they sing these tense lines, that are then solved in the choruses. At first, it sounds like a simple piece, driven by dynamics, but actually the harmonies are very clever. Well done, I enjoyed my listen a lot.

There's a great tension here between the 'mmmbop' lyrics and the subject of cookies which you'd expect to be happy and light, and the music and the underlying message in the song - which is much darker. Very cleverly done.

i love this! you have referenced the lick from "right here, right now" by jesus jones in your verse, and made it your own. the bridge is pure belle and sebastian, but with a nonchalant, skewered bite that morrissey would eat his heart out for (pun intended). weight is the last acceptable prejudice, and you have explored this complex topic in a breezy yet poignant way, catchy and thought-provoking in its trichotomy between the tongue-in-cheek lyrics, powerful subject matter, and the deceptively lighthearted mood of the music. all of my hats are off to you!

Your guitar sounds great! I love the mmmbops, too. I think I'll go pour a glass of milk and pretend I have Oreo cookies to dip in the milk.

Really like the descending and ascending notes in the verses. Very catchy pre-chorus and chorus. Excellent guitar work.

Great song about what many teens experience, unfortunately... I love the lines "Love a cookie - cookie loves you back" and "and the love that she needs is too high on the shelf/...but she can reach a cookie". Great guitar play and very nice singing, too...

Your songs are always unique and chock full of interesting things. Love that guitar figure that propels the first part of the song, the mmm-bop part and the clever lyrics, especially "Love a cookie - cookie loves you back."

"Cookie loves you back"is a great line among a ton of others.Music is kind of spare and perfect for the song and the doo-wops are awesome. You really did a great job on this.

Wow, this is appealing for an 'emotional eater song'. You make it sound non-judgmental and okay, which suits this song very well. Also, very nice guitar playing!

Very good song! I love the contrast of moods and the chord changing. Indeed very nicely played guitar - but I hope to hear this with a full band arrangement one day! Smile

The lyrics suggest a simple pop song, yet the arrangement is anything but. You've got some lovely stuff going on with this, sir!

And it's interesting that when this popped up on the jukebox, my first thought was "Oh, this is cool. It has to be Klaus..." That's a good thing, I reckon.

I immediately identified with the character in this song. I like the juxtaposition of suffering through school social torture and the cheerful music and cookie!

This is so fun! The guitar does unexpected sounds right away and the melody goes perfectly. Smile
