Also, join #gaming at http://fawm.slack.com.

Minecraft with my son is about all I "game". Though I do use ICE's wonderful suite of tabletop RPGs as the mechanics behind my creative writing. Don't know if that counts or not, @IA Biggrin

As per your questions:

1. Minecraft & Rolemaster/Spacemaster/Cyberspace (See above)
2. Uh, dunno…
3. Minecraft. It's like building with lego but with more science.
4. Story? Maybe?
5. Anything that uses MOD files or Tracker songs - especially if they're made in Jeskola Buzz Biggrin
6. Singleplayer is fun to explore, but Multiplayer is fun in a social sense.

@Candle ooh tracker songs are the bomb! Unreal and Age of Wonders.

By the way, here's my favorite game music on Spotify

@johnstaples Ooh, did you end up playing Alyx?

@IA no, I don't have nor want (so far) the VR hardware needed to run it.

1. What are you gaming currently?
Breath Of The Wild

2. What are you waiting for?
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge

3. Which game surprised you the most?
King Of Retail - watched a youtuber I like play it. Knowing that doesn't equate to having a fun experience playing it yourself, I bought it anyway. Was hooked instantly and addicted. The graphics are janky, lots of things need polish, but good grief if it isn't fun. Can't really even explain why.

4. Which is more important, story or gameplay?
Gameplay

5. Which games have the best soundtracks?
Double Dragon on NES
Sonic 2
Gonna cheat and say Smash Ultimate cause its got all the good stuff from other games
That Portal song

6. Multiplayer or singleplayer?
Multiplayer with people I know
Singleplayer when I don't feel like being bothered with humans.

@Candle - i love minecraft, but find that it makes me sad to play it now. I think its because of the memories of playing with my little cuz (no longer "little"; grown w/degree and job), and all that comes with that time period; that's all different/gone now so it makes me sad to play it. Plus, i've always felt it was a sad game anyway...on this weird planet all alone with nothing but zombies and animals and Squidwards who can't talk. So it always makes me feel good when I hear someone plays it with their kids or family.

@johnstaples - is The Outer Worlds enjoyable? Would you rec to someone who likes all the games you listed in your post?

@splittybooms, if you enjoy Fallout 3/Fallout New Vegas/Fallout 4/Skyrim you will prolly like The Outer Worlds. To me it feels like Fallout in space!

If you decide to buy it get it at GOG for 1/2 price with no DRM. I try to never even buy Steam games because I hate the hassle of being connected to Steam to buy or play or anything!

https://www.gog.com/game/the_outer_worlds

@splittybooms it's the only "modern" game I'll play. And it's great I can play it with my son Smile

@IA I got into recording/writing music on computer because of the Tracker scene. Back then I used Scream Tracker 3 & then upgraded to Impulse Tracker. Now I still use a Tracker to record/write music (the aforementioned Jeskola Buzz) which I find can do way more than any Tracker & gives me more creative freedom than your standard DAW.

Speaking of retro, I really miss playing Wing Commander 2 & Scorched Earth.

See You In The Shadows…

@johnstaples I still have CD-ROMs for WC Academy & WC Privateer. If I had a CD player on this new laptop I'd try to get them to work with DOSBox, but alas, no dice.

See You In The Shadows…

@Candle, here ya go! You can buy the WC1/WC2 bundle pre-configured to work on modern computers with absolutely no DRM for $1.49 right now at GOG!

1. What are you gaming currently?

Pokemon mobile romhack based on the 1997 Beta version of Gold. It was buggy and ate my savegame in the room before the Elite Four. One star.

2. What are you waiting for?

The beta release of Te Reo Māori for Duolingo. Action point for Burr.

3. Which game surprised you the most?

HeXen. With DOOM and Myst being the two best-selling games in the world at the time, someone had the utterly mad idea of creating a game that was both of those at once. And, somehow, it worked. I still play it (thanks, Steam)

4. Which is more important, story or gameplay?

Gameplay for most genres (I played DOOM for about a decade before I realised there was a plot), but for games such as RPGs the story is often the difference between being distracted from the world and being in a world to distract you

5. Which games have the best soundtracks?

I've tried to correct for nostalgia bias, but: Sonic 3 and Light Crusader (Mega Drive/Genesis) are the only soundtracks I've listened to on YouTube.

6. Multiplayer or singleplayer?

I enjoy Multiplayer more the more the game is like a sport - Quake 1? Bring 'em on. Stardew Valley? Naff off, this is me time. An exception is to be made for community-based gaming such as MUDs, which are essentially data entry if you're on your own.

Having answered these questions, I see that my taste in video games is stuck in the very same decade as my taste in music.

@Stephen Wordsmith, DOOM had a plot?

It spawned four novels, so there must have been something.

The abridged version is 'You are the last surviving Marine. Shoot everything that moves'.

@johnstaples, awesome! Thanks for the link Biggrin

See You In The Shadows…

1. What are you gaming currently?
Immortals: Fenyx Rising

2. What are you waiting for?
Breath of The Wild Sequel (although I'm going to play Zelda Skyward Sword in the meantime)

3. Which game surprised you the most?
New version of Super MonkeyBall. Gameplay was terrible, and that surprised me.

4. Which is more important, story or gameplay?
Gameplay

5. Which games have the best soundtracks?
Even as a musician, I don't really pay a whole lot of attention to the soundtracks

6. Multiplayer or singleplayer?
Singleplayer (That said, I still love me MarioKart)

1. What are you gaming currently?
Chess, Backgammon

2. What are you waiting for?
New Queen

3. Which game surprised you the most?
Othello
Pente

4. Which is more important, story or gameplay?
Playing the game

5. Which games have the best soundtracks?
My board games are blissfully quiet

6. Multiplayer or singleplayer?
Solitaire - usually single but double and triple is fun,
All other board games are very dull playing alone, so with a partner

@Stephen Wordsmith Heh, that's funny. I actually prefer Quake by my lonesome and Stardew Valley with my girlfriend.

I expect absolutely no less of you, you incurable contrarian :P

I was going to answer the itemised questions in this thread then thought I'd better not, as I can't control the games Flying Tadpole plays. (But now I want to play Doom again! And Quake!) (And I should be writing more stuff for DriveThruRPG, too.)

Romero really wanted Doom to have a rich story while Carmack wanted to get rid of it almost completely.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Development_of_Doom

"Story in a game is like story in a porn movie; it's expected to be there, but it's not that important."

I think it was more Tom Hall who wanted the rich story. And he got fired (before the big payday!)

You're right, I was wrong.

I remain astounded at what that small group of guys were able to create. Not just a game but a whole new genre!

3. Which game surprised you the most? - Scary Maze Game
4. Which is more important, story or gameplay?- Gameplay

1. What are you gaming currently?
Chicken Police, Mass Effect Legacy edition, Greedfall

2. What are you waiting for?
Nothing at the moment.

3. Which game surprised you the most?
Remothered 2

4. Which is more important, story or gameplay?
Story. I'll adapt to the gameplay if I'm invested in the narrative.

5. Which games have the best soundtracks?
Mass Effect 2, Resident Evil 2, The Saboteur

6. Multiplayer or singleplayer?
Single player - I'm a mediocre gamer so teaming up with me would be an exercise in futility with any group campaign.

Fallout 76
