I see a lot of people planning to use Zoom for their FAWMStock sessions. One thing you should know is that Zoom is optimized for voice, so if you're planning to play music you need to change some of the default settings.
1. Disable "Automatically adjust microphone volume"
If you go to Preferences -> Audio you'll see that this option is enabled by default. This usually helps during voice chats, since it will increase the input gain when you speak softer and reduce when you're louder. For music performances, though, this will kill your dynamic range and make your song sound homogeneous.
Turning this off will allow you to have a performance with quiet parts and energetic parts. Turn it off when presenting, and adjust the input gain manually instead.
2. Disable "Suppress Persistent Background Noise" and "Suppress Intermittent Background Noise"
These are advanced options under Preferences -> Audio -> ADVANCED. These options use machine learning to reduce noise, but are fine tuned to speech, not singing. So you probably want to turn this off to preserve all the nuances of your performance.
3. Enable 'Show in-meeting option to "Enable Original Sound" from microphone'
This is also an advanced option under Preferences -> Audio -> ADVANCED. It allows guests in your meeting to send the original unmodified audio, without using Zoom's echo cancellation and audio-enhancing features.
4. "Enable stereo"
This one is useful if you have stereo effects in your performance, like reverb or chorus. Zoom makes it really hard to enable stereo, because it greatly increases the bandwidth. To enable this, first go to your Zoom profile on the Web (https://us02web.zoom.us/profile/setting) and enable "Allow users to select stereo audio in their client settings". Once you've done that, you should see an option "Enable Stereo" show up in your audio preferences. Turn that on, but only if you're performing a song where stereo is important.
5. Settings for the host
As a Zoom host, you should enable a few options for your guests to perform. Go to your web profile (https://us02web.zoom.us/profile/setting) and enable these 2 options:
- "Allow users to select original sound in their client settings"
- "Allow users to select stereo audio in their client settings"
Also, enable the 'Show in-meeting option to "Enable Original Sound" from microphone' in your Zoom client.
With this, guests will see an option that says "Turn On Original Sound" in their client, which they can click to have their audio be sent directly without the audio processing that Zoom does.
