Be part of a 5090 podcast - please

47 replies [Last post]

I have decided to make a 5090 podcast, as discussed on this forum* (http://fiftyninety.fawmers.org/content/5090-radio), but I need your help please! In my head it'll be a weekly update of what's happening and what's new on the site.

I need suggestions for:
5090ers to interview
Interesting forum threads
Interesting songs in general (I'll definitely keep an eye on the Recommended Tracks forum)
Interesting songs from the challenges and skirmishes
Anything else you think I'm missing.

I'm going to try and record most of the first one this afternoon so I can just get it started, otherwise I'll never get around to it.

So... any ideas?

*I've started a separate forum thread so that the title subject more accurately reflects what I'm after. If the Mod's think I ought to continue just in one, more than happy to...

That G Slade dude is pretty interesting...at least I think so.

This thread's pretty interesting: http://fiftyninety.fawmers.org/content/three-things-youve-learned-helped...

I haven't contributed my three yet, but I'm learning a lot just by lurking.

Weekly Challenge Episode or Episodes

An episode or episodes could consist of songs written for each week's compositional challenge. You could look up the songs by their tags, such as #1week challenge phobias; #2week challenge trains, etc. Maybe you could pick your three favorite songs from the challenges, play those and talk about what you like about them, then play a few of your songs and talk about the processes behind them.

@G Slade - sweet! Do you have skype? Email me your name and we'll organise a time Smile

@Outasync: Thanks. I've passed by that one, and it's definitely interesting. I'll add it to my bookmarks.

@ultravioleteyejeff: Great idea. Thanks!

all good ideas Smile
if you want to interview me, i'd be happy to volunteer... course, theres lots of other folks here who would love the idea too..

@mike skliar: awesome! If you have skype, email me your skype name and we'll organise a time to chat Smile

This is pretty cool, Kf. Not sure how I could help, but um...I'll think of something. Smile

@cts thanks. Let me know what you come up with hahah

Also, I've just finished the first cut of the whole episode, 45 minutes total. Wowsers. Rest assured, I'm not talking for most of that Wink Will check through it tonight and hopefully upload it somewhere tomorrow.

@kiwafruit - super-awesome that you're doing this.

You've almost inspired me to try and do one as well, but... reality is starting to set in.

Are we allowed to use whatever songs from 50/90? Just a wonderin

@TC Elliott: sweeeeet. I think we can? I've tried to contact most people initially, that if they have any issues to let me know.

i'd love to be involved, but i seriously doubt i have time (including time spent kicking this computer into shape for skype). Are we using this thread as a "you have permission to play my songs" thread, or will that be separate?

I'll start one. I'd like to see Eric put it in the new song sign up, like they did in FAWM, for posting publicly. So that all songs are fair game that are downloadable. That'd rock (unless you wanted downloadable songs not played on a podcast/radio show thingy)

@Calum: good point, that was always a good thread to go to. Feel free to share it here or start another, particularly if TC Elliott is going to start a separate one (although we could join forces perhaps, then it wouldn't just be me nattering away).

@TC Eliott That would be awesome if it was included! There are a few things that dint make it from FAWM to 50/90 Sad

Hey, give me a shout if I can help!

Awesome about getting this thing off the ground. I really like the idea of the 5090 radio podcast, but as with others here, time doesn't quite allow for me to pull it off. I'm really looking forward to hearing what you put together! I'd be happy to help in some capacity, but not sure what that would be. Drop me a line if I can do anything.

The podcasts need a short intro theme music bit. Smile

@TomS: I've written a jingle for the beginning http://fiftyninety.fawmers.org/songs/9549 but need quick snippets of theme music for the different segments ("Weekly challenges" "Songskirmish" "Forum action" "Interview with a 5090er") and an outro. You want to have a go? I've asked @cts as well, but the more jingles the better in my opinion Wink

I've done it!! I think?

View the blog here: http://5090podcast.blogspot.com/
The first episode is linked there in the first post. Subscribe to the feed with the RSS feed to the right. I've submitted to iTunes, so hopefully something will happen there.

But the first episode is done! Laughing out loud :D Laughing out loud :D Laughing out loud :D

Well done! I'm downloading it now. Can't wait to check it out!

::EDIT::

I'm listening now, and am really impressed. You have a great mic presence, and a wonderful approach to presenting the podcast. This is going to make work this morning much more enjoyable.

Smile

Hey,

First, thanks for featuring me. Had a quick listen - You've done an excellent job here! The sound quality is great and you have a really good presenting style. Looking forward to hearing the rest of it later on.

Listening now - great stuff!

kiwafruit, I can't tell you how tickled I was to discover you had included the song that cts made so good. Smile

I second what others have said, you have a great radio voice, it could be a really, really good college radio station over here in the states.

Great listen and already turned me on to a couple of really good tracks I had missed previously. More, more! Wink

If I make a podcast will you add it to your stream so there isn't a dozen (okay, two) going on at once? Or is it better to start another one entirely?

Thanks for warm fuzzies guys Smile Really appreciated. I work in web conferencing and digital/face-to-face facilitation so I'm pretty used to talking and making it interesting, it's nice to be able to use that experience for something fun. Sorry about the audio quality - I'm going to try and get a hold of a better headset this week...

@TC Elliott: I'm more than happy to add yours to the same stream. I'll just change the details of the show notes to make sure it's clear it's your episode if you like? Send me an email and I'll talk you through the steps of uploading it and stuff Smile

On interesting songs, I can highly recommend the tinam/gerrybhoy collaborations Wink Considering the jukebox seems to be broken whenever I try it now, this is a great replacement.

@blindkiwi - yeah, I've found the jukebox doesn't want to play if I don't have any restrictions set (e.g. set to watchlist, tags, etc)...

@kiwafruit - thanks for that, guess I gave up to easy. Looking forward to the next podcast, and working on music for 'how to make paella'

Anyone keen to be interviewed? I'm taking a leaf out of @G Slade's book at looking at posting interviews with artists as well as curated style of episode.

To do that, I need people, who (if they are North American-based) are available at "odd" times so I can talk to you via skype.

Anyone?

*bump*

Hey kiwafruit, I don't know how interesting a subject I am, but I would be game for an interview at some point. Given the fact that I'm on the East Coast of the US, I think I'm about half a day behind you. Maybe we can figure something out, though, if you're interested.

@jonniegrunge - I'm sure you're plenty interesting Smile Well, I'm GMT +10 so not sure how that suits. I'm normally free from 5pm Fridays to 11pm Sunday. During the week seems to be too difficult to make work unless you stay up rather late Wink
Email me your details and we'll organise something soon.

Also, episode 3 is now up http://5090podcast.blogspot.com/2011/08/world-needs-some-harmonies-5090-... or you can subscribe from iTunes Smile

Woot! You played The Lark! Smile Thanks Kahiwa, it was fun recording that Laughing out loud and the podcasts are GREAT!! finding so many great songs from them - excellent work Smile

Hmmm... my podcatcher (Downcast for iOS) sees the episode in the feed, but isn't downloading the mp3 (it just shows me the show notes). Also, can't see it in iTunes on my iPod.

Is it possible the RSS thingy has a formatting error?

@Echo voodoo: hmmmm I'm not sure. I did everything the same as I did last time... I'll check it out. In the meantime, you can download the mp3 directly from the blog post, but that dumb so I'll have a look at it.

EDIT

I just fiddled around with a couple of settings and I think I've got it working now - episode 3 has appeared in iTunes, so I'll do the same thing for episode 2 and that should hopefully fix it Smile

Thanks, @kiwafruit, it's downloading as I type. Laughing out loud

Episode 2 worked properly for me, incidentally - it was episode 3 that was giving my setup issues.

Kiwa, I am on Skype at Michael Gutierrez-May. Would enjoy participating in a podcast. Three people you have featured, Nancy Rost, Expendable Friend and Robyn MacKenzie are on an album I released this past May called Fifty Miles Away (on CD Baby). I met both through FAWM and have correspondended with both and several others here on 5090. Listening to Podcast #3 as I write this-very nice.

Thank you for playing my song. Great shows so far.

If you are interested, I'd be happy to be interviewed at whatever odd time can be arranged. This weekend is FAWMstock II, so some later date in time might be better. (or maybe a FAWMstock interview( s )?)

I decided I wouldn't like to be interviewed but Helen below is at GMT+1 and responding to when it did seem like a good idea.

Me too, pretty much what Hoops said, but I'm better at mornings and less available during the week.

i can be interviewed, if you like, but i'm really busy so you might want to not do me till later, if at all. Plus i'm in Scotland, so times are probably an issue too.

And i haven't even had time to listen to any of the podcasts yet! But i plan to. Posting in this thread is reminding me to fit that in sometime.

... and besides, lots of people want to do Calum later. You'll just have to take a ticket and stand in line for the next available double entendre.

Welcome back dude - I see you've returned from your holidays Smile

"...take a ticket and stand in line for the next available double entendre." That's just freaking hilarious, sir. Win, themiller. Win.

LOL @themiller is totally #winning

@calum carlyle - I would very much like to do - I mean, interview - you when you are perhaps a little less busy. Scotland/Europe is probably easier to organise than the States because I can at least try early morning here which is evening in Europe-landia. Anyways, I'm GMT +10, so just send me an email with when you think you might be free. Please Smile
