Have you played any of your 5090 songs live yet?

Yes, I have. I usually get to play two songs at various (songwriter's) open mic's, and I try to pick new songs every time. I have played these ones for now:

2011-08??? The Soul Of Rock'n Roll
2011-10-10 Stop That Thing You're Doing
2011-10-10 Jeg er lottomillionær
2011-10-17 Jeg Hader Cykler
2011-10-17 My Good Life
2011-10-18 Be Careful Where You Stand (OK, that one was a FAWM 2011 song)
2011-10-18 Guadalcanal (Lie In Wait)
2011-10-25 I Can't Even Fetch My Hat (Lucky)
2011-10-25 Strange Creatures (Unfamiliar And Unforgiven)
2011-10-28 Hunger In The Eyes
2011-10-28 Jeg er lottomillionær

Dawnsoap and I did two at an open mic last Thursday - "Diamond Mine" and "Mt Sunflower". It was the first time either of us have taken part in an open mic. The crowd really liked "Diamond Mine". Now I wish she lived closer so we could sing more! Maybe I'll get brave and go alone some week...just maybe.

The last open mic I went to I played A little Bit of Loving., http://fiftyninety.fawmers.org/songs/6948 (but I have an new extended 2nd verse now ) and We Chose the Road (50/90 2010): http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=1144009&songID=... .

I also played Alchemy a few weeks ago: http://fiftyninety.fawmers.org/songs/9415 .

I've attended two weekend-long music conventions during October and played seven of my 2011 50/90 songs at them, some of those at both events. That's in addition to whatever I've played live for friends. Compared to 2010, when I got four songs that I play fairly often, I'm much happier with how more of this year's songs turned out.

Played in our school fair some of the songs and also in our local church. I needed to rehearse to remember what I actually composed... I think every time I play diffrently LOL...

So far I've performed 8 of my 50/90 songs. Like bong, I try to do a new song every time I perform - I did a FAWM '10 song for the first time recently. And I'm often adding new cover songs, too - Phish's "Sample In a Jar" and Springsteen's "I'm On Fire" are a couple I've started doing lately. I like to wing it, make stuff up on the fly - see if anyone's really paying attention.
Last gig, I played a bunch of requests for a friend's 5-year-old son, because he was sitting on a picnic table right in front of me and listening intently. He knew a bunch of my originals from the CDs I gave his mom. And he got a kick out of "Man Smart Woman Smarter," an old Harry Belafonte song the Grateful Dead used to do.
And as for what Nadia said above - I actually go out of my way to play a song differently each time I do it. It's that Grateful Dead influence.

I've performed several of my 50/90 songs at a local open mic. I think there are a bunch more that will be in the loop once I can memorize them. They're all quite short, as my guitarsmanship isn't there for adding much in the way of filler.
*Country Music's Good Enough for Me (seems to go over well)
*Give My Daddy a Guitar (FAWM Song, definitely going over)
*(If there Ain't No) Beer in Heaven (also seems to be working)
*I Love You for Your Feet (maybe -- I was flubbing my B-minor)
*Little Ladle Lady (not going over)
*Greasy Tortilla (neutral but optimistic)
*Instructions for Use (maybe -- I like it)
*Seeds of Songs (working, I think, perhaps a bit saccharine)
*You Laugh When You Cry (neutral but optimistic)
*River Runs Wide (not working, but might if I can find the right groove)
*Cogito Ergo Some (FAWM Song, I love it, but perhaps too highbrow)

I may do some "live performing" today - by that I mean go outside, turn on the Sony hand-sized lecture/meeting recorder, and play a few songs. Then re-acquaint myself with Soundcloud and post what I do. Thinking of "Amazing Grace," (it's yet another Sunday of skipping Mass but still feeling sorta spiritual), Grateful Dead's "Black Muddy River" (similar to "Amazing Grace" in chord structure a bit) and a 50/90 song or two.
And as I sequenced my 50/90 "album" for the heck of it this morning, I remembered that three of the songs were actually recorded live at my organic market gig: "Whispering Bridge," "My Dog's Name Is Peanut," and "Funky Canvas."
I'm on the 50/90 site a lot this morning, as I procrastinate some work things I need to accomplish soon!

I've played "The Solution" a couple of times using my looper pedal.

I played "Why Tell Me?" and one from a couple years ago, "Blood of Jesus" (I forget if that was 50/90 or FAWM) about a month ago at an Open Mic night at the Atlanta Freethought Society. No one threw anything at me.

I so wish the forums had a "like" button sometimes. Benbradley - you made me laugh! I had the same thought when I was going into my first open mic - As long as no one throws anything at me I'll be OK. My first time out I was told I should really get something to plug in, so I bought a beginners level acoustic electric (it was on sale). It came in the mail yesterday. Now I HAVE to play again. I've invested!

Last month, I did a song I wrote with Helen called "Never Wanna Be Like Me." It went over quite well.

Tonight I'll probably do "Go Get The Keys" and a co-write with McTown called "Chicks From the Sticks."

well i thought i hadn't done any 5090 2011 ones live yet, because i've still barely aired any of my FAWM 2011 ones either. However, checking my 5090 list this year shows the following for these songs:

The Pain Of Never Saying I Love You - performed once last month, as a duet with Caro Bridges, it was recorded, let me know if you want to hear.

Signature Only - Ditto with this one, dueted it with Caro Bridges, it was a pleasure doing this song with someone as talented as kiwafruit, given that kiwafruit was not available to do the gig with me! Was recorded also.

Wishful Thinking - I've done this one a few times live now.

Nothing but You - Done this once at an open mic, it got quite a lacklustre response, though it has been very popular the few times i have performed it privately in people's living rooms.

Tuda Muda - did this live of course, as it was a real life co-write and the performance was part of the process.

Close Your Eyes - Haven't done this live in public yet, but i can do it, because i have done a couple of living room "performances" round people's houses.

I also want to learn up my own performable versions of: I still Feel, No Way Home, Two Souls, Princess In A Sundress all of which had extensive input from collaborators, so i've never actually had them in a way i could perform them solo yet.

Apathetic Woman - i could do this live in my sleep, but it's basically a twelve bar blues, so why would i?

*tongue firmly planted in cheek* I didn't realize there was a rule against playing twelve bar blues.

Dawn and I did a second 'open mic' and lived through it again! I even had one artist ask me to add some alto to one of his covers later in the night. He said he could tell I was a harmonizer. Dawn and I did three originals from 50/90. This is a whole new world for me...and I may just be hooked.

@TC, well it's not that so much as it's almost a "waste" of a song in my mind to play a twelve bar song, to a "listening" audience anyway (as opposed to a drinking audience, i suppose, though most audiences do both to varying degrees). Also, i don't like the creeping feeling that somewhere in the room there will be at least one person thinking "oh, it's just a twelve bar blues, ho hum".

*i* like twelve bar blueses though! Smile

The only 12 bar blues you really need:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xnk-jAZ6Nnk

Sometimes late in a show, they'd say they didn't have time for the whole thing, so they'd play the 11 bar blues.

I played a one off gig in an acoustic duo with my friend Sam and sang two songs. (He is a singer and did the rest.) One was an original and the other was 'It Hurts Me Too', the Elmore James standard. We got the most applause from that blues song than any of the other songs. If it's a band playing blues all night I get a bit tired of it unless it's pretty darn authentic. And I was the biggest blues guy around for a long time. But you get a good one and I love it.

Evidence! There's a state-wide free entertainment magazine here in Arkansas called Nightflying, and my performance at an open mic got mentioned. I did as many as a dozen 50/90 songs that night, and one, "Erwin Schrödiger's Cat" even gets a mention in the article, --- a few inches down the center column: www.nightflying.com/new/31anniv/Page18.pdf

"So I wandered into Chelsea’s open mic this week to
gather information for this article and first guy I heard,
Woody Muller, had songs as good as Tom Lehrer. “They
don’t play Pachelbel at the Taco bell.” He did a song
about “Schrödinger’s Cat.” Wonderful… Woody came
to Chelsea’s for the first time, drove a hour to honor
a friend who’s memorial open mic was being held in
Colorado that night. This is what open mics are all
about. Sharing a community of music."

i will be doing a live webgig by the way, on Saturday 21 January, with two excellent performers (Caro Bridges and Pol Arida) also doing live sets. We don't know the time or URL yet but you're all more than welcome to tune in.

The idea is it's before FAWM starts, because so many of you round the world can't come to a live gig (of mine!) so thought i would do a web one like a few of you have done.

Anyway, i will be doing FAWM and 5090 songs for a large part.

I'd love to see that webgig, Calum. Will you be posting the time and URL here?

i will. i know some of you will be interested.

In fact i know that it will be Saturday 21 January, and that it will begin at 8pm UK time. There will be three performers:

Pol Arida - http://polarida.com
Caro Bridges - http://flavors.me/carobridges
Calum Carlyle - http://calumcarlyle.co.uk

Not necessarily in that order, but it'll be roughly a half hour set each. Caro Bridges and i will be doing a duet or two, of songs that i wrote during 5090.

It's free, of course, and i don't have the URL yet, but it is being hosted by local musician Pol Arida, and he tells me the best way to view it is using his Pol TV application, downloadable from http://www.polarida.com

For those who don't want to download, there will be a URL which will work with MS Windows and Mac OSX computers which have Windows Media installed, which hopefully will mean most people.

I'll post back here with the URL and do a FB invite when i know the full details.

Hi - okay, well i'm sorry Donna but it's not to be. The computer which was to be used has completely died (motherboard plus capture card totalled, from flooding i think) so this is on hold indefinitely.

The second time this has happened to me actually. I'm taking it as a sign from the heavens.

Sorry to anyone that had got their hopes up about a Calum Carlyle live webcast.

See you next 5090.
