Checking in from Fort Myers in Florida for my annual summer shut-in songwriting experience. My parents moved here from PA (I was a kid) in 1969. Except for six years mostly spent in Gainesville, FL to go to UF. Even then my permanent home address was still in Fort Myers. I have seen lots of changes. Written about some of them.

Fort Myers here, too - right down the road from @AndyGetch!
Sixteen years here - Ohio transplant. Despite all its weirdness - even more so lately - this is home.

I'm in Daytona Beach, and still pretty new here. It's not at all like I thought it would be. . . this place is super-famous, and all my life I've heard of it, and assumed it was some kind of ritzy glamorous resort town. Turns out the place is full of meth heads and elderly Republicans, and aside from the swathes of town where the rich old folks live, most of it needs to be burned to the ground so that civilization can be reasserted on the ashes. The hotel where Aileen Wuornos operated out of in her career as a streetwalking serial killer can be seen from my porch.

Heh. No offense, but I'm originally from California, and my experience of Florida is that it is the foyer to Hades.

@motisbeard Our nearest beach town is Fort Myers Beach on the Gulf Coast, which is not as famous or, apparently, as scary! Years ago, I visited West Palm Beach and had a similar experience to yours. There's the resort/tourist part (Singer Island, and the main street of downtown) and, well, everything else.
Florida is indeed an intense place to be right now ... and then add in the extra vigilance of hurricane season! But it's been home for 16 years. We moved from Ohio.

'Scary' is not an unjust word to use. A couple of months ago, the dogs started going insane in the middle of the night, and I got out of bed to see what the hell. . . some methedrine-enhanced induhvidual had entered our FENCED, GATED yard, and was sitting on the porch swing right outside the front door.

Well, heck, I'm pretty scary too, and this is a "stand your ground" State. I'm not as much of a villain as people say I am, so I didn't actually shoot our uninvited visitor even though I could have. If I had, the police response would likely have been something along the lines of "Nice shot!"

Checking in from Gainesville, formerly Tampa.

@motisbeard You've pretty much described every FL east coast beach town between Miami and St. Augustine. I'm originally from Cocoa and it's much the same.
