It was suggested that Old Brown Shoe could be included as part of the Abbey Road covers for Rocktober this year. Here is my version. I'd never played it before and added a slide guitar part in standard tuning as something that George Harrison might have done at some point. What a tricky song this is! There are so many subtle parts (at least in my opinion) my version is full of mistakes but I hope it sounds good enough. Listening to the original makes me appreciate just how good the Beatles were as musicians, for example the drumming is excellent. (unlike mine!!!)

I always found Golden Slumbers on Abbey Road a little jarring. It was a lullaby song but it had McCartney roaring in his best rock and roll voice on the lines of 'sleep' and 'I will sing a lullaby'. His vocal would have prevented any child from entering the land of nod. And so here is my gentler version.

Here's a semi-quick take of an old guitar favorite of mine, George Harrison's "Here comes the sun" from the Beatles Abbey Rd album.

This was one of the first songs that I learned on guitar that had a little more then your basic strum-chord-strum thing - when I learned that run (during the 'it's all right' section) I remember this great feeling...

THe usual way I played it back then was just to capo up at the fifth or seventh fret. I decided to do a first track of guitar with no capo, re-learn that 'run' down on the neck, and then do a duet with the capo on five, then overdubbed a quick vocal (and in one spot a small additional vocal overdub)

the whole thing done on the iPhone in garageband, then imported over to audacity for some mastering. Not ideal, and yeah, I could have dragged out the better microphones, etc, but I figured this would convey the idea and the joy of playing this little song, composed 50 years ago in a garden in England...

you know em.. (I think i left out a verse, actually!)

Here's my take on Paperback Writer. Doing this song now gave me a little chuckle having written/published 6 novels since I first heard this song as a kid. I did let the beats fade in and out to add/subtract a little something.

Lyrics:

"Paperback Writer" (Paul McCartney/John Lennon)

Paperback Writer

Dear Sir or Madam, will you read my book?
It took me years to write, will you take a look?
It's based on a novel by a man named Lear
And I need a job, so I want to be a paperback writer
Paperback writer

It's the dirty story of a dirty man
And his clinging wife doesn't understand
His son is working for the Daily Mail
It's a steady job but he wants to be a paperback writer
Paperback writer

Paperback writer

It's a thousand pages, give or take a few
I'll be writing more in a week or two
I can make it longer if you like the style
I can change it round and I want to be a paperback writer
Paperback writer

If you really like it you can have the rights
It could make a million for you overnight
If you must return it, you can send it here
But I need a break and I want to be a paperback writer
Paperback writer

Paperback writer

Paperback writer, paperback writer
Paperback writer, paperback writer
Paperback writer, paperback writer
Paperback writer, paperback writer (fade out)
